Voodoo Ray – classic dance tune

I once interviewed Gerald when I used to work for Ministry of Sound. He’d just flown in from a gig in Berlin, was an absolute legend and completely down to earth. A really nice…er Guy!

What a tune. If anyone knows how to get those 303 sounds in Ableton please let me know.

The best song in the world – ever

No doubt about it. I can’t believe Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’ is now twenty years old but it’s still the greatest single ever released by mankind. And here’s why:

16, romance, romantics, new romantics, gospel, Martin L. Gore, Dave Gahan, harmonies, 303s, acid lines, techno, first kiss, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Depeche Mode fan club, Ministry of Sound interviews, video, abstract, blue, European, alternative, white rose, Anton Corbijn, 12″, remixes, poster paint on school bags, futuristic, 80s, stealing brother’s vinyl collection, HMV, discovery.

And I still have the actual vinyl. Wonderful.

I can’t post the video here because EMI have prevented me. Instead I’ll post this Commodore 64 version which some nutter has worked on. Genius.

The best christmas music video in the history of history itself

Here you are, an early christmas present to you – a reminder of an age when cheese literally oozed from tv sets and no one took the slightest bit of notice. David Bowie and Bing Crosby with ‘Little Drummer Boy’ – surely the most unlikeliest of duets which should have never worked, but somehow actually does.

I love the script as well, I wonder if Bowie rehearsed this or just ad-libbed his way through it. You can tell that Crosby is cursing his agent for ever thinking of the promotional stunt. He’s regretting every moment of this recording and it shows.

Well, anyway, good will to all men and all that. Anyone for a mince pie?

Kelis back with Acapella

Christ, showing my age now but does anyone remember when Kelis first appeared back in 1999 with the track ‘Caught Out There‘?

Ok.silence.

Anyway, she had such a brilliant first album (Kaleidoscope) but since then its been a bit of an uphill struggle for our girl. Shame really because I think she’s one of the best female singers out there. And she’s always looked extremely cool as well.

So I am well pleased to see that’s she’s back with ‘Acapella’ which you can listen to here. Reminds me of Milkshake  – and with the mighty David Guetta behind it, you can bet it’s going to be ‘rinsed’ all over the clubs this NYE. A welcome return!

Kraftwerk: 12345678 The Catalogue Review

Kraftwerk The Catalogue[5] Kraftwerk: 12345678 The Catalogue ReviewWhat was it about Kraftwerk? Was it the greased haircuts? Was it the primary school lyrics (“by pressing down this special key, it plays a little melody”) or the fact that one of them looked like Herman Munster? Or the way they snubbed the whole 70s rock scene and rose to the challenge of making nerds look cool? Or that one, dreadful, word – cycling? Who knows why Kraftwerk have maintained their ‘allure’ over the years but one thing is certain – as more geeks and with gadgets enter the music scene it’s pretty evident that these guys are here to stay. So we’d better get used to it, right?

In fact, we can even celebrate it. For this fine October month, Kraftwerk are releasing remastered versions of their albums, giving journalists with long beards the opportunity to point out annoying titbits down the pub like ‘Coldplay just copied that bit didn’t they?’ or ‘Hot Chip? Narrrr, check out Kraftwerk in 1979 mate’. However, armed with your own remastered copies, you’ll now be able to deflect their comments by referring to the impact of Zen on their electronic and, sometimes, expressionist minimalism. Receive the blank stare and move swiftly on.

If 1974 was the year that Kraftwerk had their first hit with ‘Autobahn’ – it was also, and of no less equal importance, the year that I was born. In many ways I’ve always felt a special affinity with the group, even if I wasn’t aware of their existence until I was 15. I shared the same awful haircuts, the same awkward dance movements at school discos and poor poetry skills. So it shouldn’t be surprising that I fell completely in love with the band when I first discovered them.

‘Radio-Activity’, ‘Trans Europe-Express’ and ‘The Man Machine’  – yes, all released for your listening pleasure. I for one will be doing very little work this month as I plug into my desktop at work and respond to colleagues in binary fits and starts, playing simple melodies whilst holding down special keys.

See you when I have fully recovered.

Lookalikes: Hawkwind

Hawkwind’s Quark, Strangeness and Charm album. One of the best psychedelic rock albums ever. No question. But take a look at the album cover here:

Looks a bit like Battersea Power Station doesn’t it?
