On Bing today…

As someone who has never skied (but is considering) I have to admit that today’s Bing image fills me with fear and trepidation. I could think of nothing worse than being amongst this crowd waiting to..well whatever you do when you’re waiting for someone to get the hell out of the way so you can go crack some bones. Surely, there must be an easier way?

Things I’ve Learnt this week: David Allen and Fish

This week I’ve been ploughing through ‘Getting Things Done’ by David Allen – and I’ve been liking it. Now, I’ve never read a productivity book before, partly because I never knew they existed but also because I used to think productivity consultants were really the great undead who walked the earth with a vague sense of what life was truly about. However, I recently watched a Live Meeting which David led and it inspired me to pick up one of his books and give it a go.

So here goes:

The key message behind ‘Getting Things Done’ is simply ‘action’. You’ve got to plan how you are going to deal with all the ‘low level’ tasks that hit you everyday in order to give yourself time and space to focus on the big wins. It’s a little early to say if this book has worked out for me but it’s definitely helped me to be more aware of of my own planning techniques and how I deal with people. Plus, my desk at work has now benefited from a spring clean. ‘Everything in its right place’ as someone used to sing.

Second thing I learnt this week is ‘HAVE FUN!’ So that’s what I’ll be doing from now on.

Exporting/Importing blog posts with Windows Live Writer

I recently took the decision to transfer a load of posts from my Windows Live Spaces account to this blog and enjoyed the great pleasure of banging my head against a wall for at least two evenings trying to figure out how to do it. Now I have the answer.

Download Windows Live Writer
Set up your account details for your old/new blogs
Download the posts to your machine
Upload the posts to your new blog.

You might have to tweak the posts afterwards according to your blog environment but I found the process really slick and pretty easy to use. A bulk action process would make this even better as you can only import/export posts one at a time.

Using IE8 Web Accelerator to speed up social networking

Here’s a neat trick. I’ve been trying to get my head around trying to seed out content to all my social network groups in the fastest and easiest way possible and I think I’ve cracked it. Rather than populating the top of my browser with loads of Digg or Twitter icons, I’m using IE 8′s new web accelerator function combined with the Shareaholic service. The rest is easy. Simply:

  • Download the IE Accelerator add-on from Shareaholic website here
  • Install it and make sure you make it the default add-on for social networking tasks
  • Then simply navigate to a piece of online content, right click on the headline. You should see this:

If you click on the Shareaholic icon you will be taken to a page of options like this:

Simply select the service you want, input your username and password for each account (you’ll only need to do this once) and BINGO your content will be ready to publish on that network.

As long as you have all your social network account details at hand, it’s pretty easy to set this all up. With the combined power of Accelerator and Shareaholic I would say that what would have normally taken me an hour, now takes me about 15 minutes. Brilliant stuff.

All I need to do now is read the new Trust Agents book so I can figure out how to do all of this without spamming anyone! More on that later.

Good luck.

Microsoft Kick-off with Steve Ballmer

Just came back from our annual conference, narrowly avoiding having to go onstage to sing to a Lips track. Some really great speeches, the content of which you’ll probably read into tomorrow’s press as Steve Ballmer attended and ‘rocked’ the whole show. Really inspiring stuff and all delivered in the fantastic surroundings of Wembley Stadium – hence the image featured in today’s bing homepage. On me head son.

Microsoft Tag is out of this world

Just watched the latest Microsoft tag video over at Steve Clayton’s blog. This type of technology is what every retailer will be after once they get their head round it. Not sure if teleportation comes as standard but I can find out for anyone out there who might be interested.
