Brit Awards 2010 Disaster

Another year, maybe a little unfair to call it another disaster, but you do have to admit that this year was pretty bad. Why?

  • What was the first 30 minutes about. So slow.
  • Peter Kay was not funny. Where was Ricky Gervais!
  • Jonathan Ross looked like a.
  • How many times do we have to see the Spice Girls on stage?
  • I thought this was 30 years of the Brits? Where was the celebration?
  • Sam Fox messed up her lines again!
  • Fearn Cotton – did we really need those offstage interviews and commentary? Actually, do we really need Fearn Cotton?
  • How many times did we need to have ‘Audio Muted’?
  • Liam – classic!
  • Where was Muse? Where was the rock?
  • Sorry, Flo/Dizzee performance – didn’t get it
  • Best Brits album of last 30 years – how did Sade get in there???
  • Lady Gaga – have you noticed how she accepts awards like Prince did in the 80s?
  • Well done Simon Cowell, I mean JLS
  • Prince Harry – what was the face about at the end?
  • Thank god for Americans – the Jay Z/Alesha Keys and Lady GaGa were brilliant
  • Then again, so was Robbie

Kill Survivors before it kills us

Come on, be honest. You must agree that the BBC’s latest adaptation of Survivors is a complete waste of time and money.

It’s not strictly this series alone that strives only to fail. I’m getting pretty sick of all these TV shows that start with a pretty decent premise, throws in some interesting characters and then nothing, Kaput, de nada. I’m going to call it the ‘One In Three’ rule. You hook ‘em in with a semi decent storyline and then drag it out so that there’s only one decent hour in three. There might be a rising trend in consuming programmes like these as part of an entire DVD package over a single weekend – but you do have to draw the line at drivel.

The thing that is particularly bad with Survivors is that tries to be a cosy catastrophe like The Day of The Triffids and other post-apocalyptic visions, but it ends up being nothing at all.

And, speaking of Triffids, did you see the way the Beeb botched that one up at Christmas as well?

Rant, rant, rant. One of the many ways of demonstrating why this series sucks is the casting of Paterson Joseph in the lame character of Greg Preston. Now Joseph is, in my opinion, one of the best Shakespearean actors out there. If you ever see him on stage you’ll see how talented this guy is. But translated onto screen his talents are wasted. It’s like inviting Chekov in for a nice cup of tea at the Queen Vic.

The BBC describe Paterson’s character thus:

‘Greg Preston (Paterson Joseph) A former systems analyst for a big multi-national, Greg felt trapped and dreamed of a new life. But his wife, who had grown used to a wealthy and comfortable lifestyle, was appalled by his utopian vision of a new, hard scrabble future. Nursing bitter personal wounds, Greg is now a man who believes he can live without love, friendship or family. ‘

Hardly Troilus and Cressida is it? And it plays out like this:

In fact, this clip alone was perhaps the most exciting part of that particular episode. Painful to watch.

I’m not having a dig at the actors, it’s the script I’m on about. And the audacity of slopping this up for a full hour each week.

But, being a sucker, I’ll probably watch it to the end.

West Wing Stream of Consciousness

So I’ve just got around to watching West Wing on DVD. On about series 2 now which is absolutely brilliant, as most things are on HBO. At least I think it’s HBO. Have to say I don’t understand most of it, I sort of drift in and out as the characters discuss US politics in depth, making me feel really insecure like I should be checking out Wikipedia more often to find out what Congress or the Senate actually do. All those long continuous camera shots following the characters as they converse through corridors of power. Relentless and unending.  Makes you feel like an eavesdropper. Unnecessary. Then they smack you with a massive patriotic episode, which to a cynical Brit sort of catches you off guard. You want to join the collective sense of patriotism, but you feel almost guilty doing so. Reminds me of Battlestar Galactica. The long camera shots that is. Was that HBO? I never thought I’d be able to sustain such a long, narrative ramble like West Wing. I thought you could only have that kind of dialogue in books. Not sure if I’ll be able to hang out until the final series. These TV programs have the habit of diluting themselves until there’s only one decent episode in every three. 24 got that way. Not sure I can stand seeing Jack Bauer again. Nice music on West Wing. Makes me feel all…there’s that word again.

How the X Factor affects UK chart sales

Just received this from Nielsen. Pretty obvious, but still extremely interesting. It’s a shame that X Factor is now only one of very few shows on TV that artists can perform – the whole event is so theatrical it reflects badly on natural talent. But that may have always have been the case with tv talent contests.

I’ll still be watching it this year though!

So You Think You Can Dance

So are you all set for the Beeb’s new talent show that launches on Jan 2nd? Looking at these clips, I think it’s got great potential. However, it needs to go really X Factor in order to maintain our attention right through to the finals. Which begs the question, why isn’t this on ITV?

I love some of Nigel Lythgoe’s reactions here on the BBC website – got to be better than Simon Cowell surely? And what about Got To Dance?
