Exporting/Importing blog posts with Windows Live Writer

I recently took the decision to transfer a load of posts from my Windows Live Spaces account to this blog and enjoyed the great pleasure of banging my head against a wall for at least two evenings trying to figure out how to do it. Now I have the answer.

Download Windows Live Writer
Set up your account details for your old/new blogs
Download the posts to your machine
Upload the posts to your new blog.

You might have to tweak the posts afterwards according to your blog environment but I found the process really slick and pretty easy to use. A bulk action process would make this even better as you can only import/export posts one at a time.

Good luck!

Using IE8 Web Accelerator to speed up social networking

Here’s a neat trick. I’ve been trying to get my head around trying to seed out content to all my social network groups in the fastest and easiest way possible and I think I’ve cracked it. Rather than populating the top of my browser with loads of Digg or Twitter icons, I’m using IE 8′s new web accelerator function combined with the Shareaholic service. The rest is easy. Simply:

  • Download the IE Accelerator add-on from Shareaholic website here
  • Install it and make sure you make it the default add-on for social networking tasks
  • Then simply navigate to a piece of online content, right click on the headline. You should see this:

If you click on the Shareaholic icon you will be taken to a page of options like this:

Simply select the service you want, input your username and password for each account (you’ll only need to do this once) and BINGO your content will be ready to publish on that network.

As long as you have all your social network account details at hand, it’s pretty easy to set this all up. With the combined power of Accelerator and Shareaholic I would say that what would have normally taken me an hour, now takes me about 15 minutes. Brilliant stuff.

All I need to do now is read the new Trust Agents book so I can figure out how to do all of this without spamming anyone! More on that later.

Good luck.

Microsoft Kick-off with Steve Ballmer

Just came back from our annual conference, narrowly avoiding having to go onstage to sing to a Lips track. Some really great speeches, the content of which you’ll probably read into tomorrow’s press as Steve Ballmer attended and ‘rocked’ the whole show. Really inspiring stuff and all delivered in the fantastic surroundings of Wembley Stadium – hence the image featured in today’s bing homepage. On me head son.

Microsoft Tag is out of this world

Just watched the latest Microsoft tag video over at Steve Clayton’s blog. This type of technology is what every retailer will be after once they get their head round it. Not sure if teleportation comes as standard but I can find out for anyone out there who might be interested.

More from Le Book here. Would be pretty cool to get this on MSN UK homepage I think:

Is simplicity best, or simply the easiest: The Future of Newspapers

Steve Clayton posted back in September a mock-up presented by Microsoft US showing how newspapers could take advantage of the latest digital apps to deliver a ‘next gen’ newspaper experience. Here’s the screenshot:

Steve has already commented on the design and, to a large extent I agree with him:

‘.the above still looks a bit too much like information overload for me.What I’d love to see is that beautiful reading experience augmented with digital breadcrumbs from sources like Twitter. Think of it as the confluence of high quality paper journalism with realtime digital narrative. I’d love to read the official report of the football matches here in the UK in a digital Sunday Times with snippets attached from Twitter and blogs. That’s what the future of newspapers means to me – the best of traditional with the best of digital.’

I think he’s cracked something there, and it’s something we’ve tried to introduce here at MSN UK with our new ‘wide page’ design. There has to be a balance between the old and the new – a layout that allows the text to breathe (the old) and technical innovation that allows you to pull in the latest, relevant data on your subject (the new). It’s just too easy to swamp your page with gadgets that distract your reader from the act of actually reading text.

Anyway, here’s a screenshot of the our new MSN TV layout, compared with the previous version. Hope you think it’s an improvement!
